How to use it
- Choose a format. For anything else, such as 2-minute rounds or eight rounds, change Work, Rest and Rounds with the steppers; the page remembers them.
- Prop the phone or laptop where you can see it from the bag or the ring, turn the volume up and go full screen. Keep screen on is there so the display does not sleep mid-round.
- Press Start. You get 10 seconds to glove up and get to your stance, then round 1 begins.
- Work until the long tone. The last three seconds of every round and every rest are beeped, so you know when to finish a combination and when to get your hands back up.
Round lengths in boxing, MMA and Muay Thai
Men’s professional boxing uses 3-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest, and championship fights are scheduled for 12 rounds. Women’s professional rounds are commonly 2 minutes. Amateur, Olympic-style bouts are 3 rounds of 3 minutes.
MMA rounds are 5 minutes with 1 minute between them: 3 rounds for most bouts, 5 for title fights and main events. Traditional Muay Thai is 5 rounds of 3 minutes with 2-minute breaks. The longer break is part of the sport’s rhythm, and it makes a Muay Thai session feel different from a boxing one even though the rounds match.
Building a session around a 3 minute round timer
Training in fight-length rounds teaches pacing. Three minutes is long enough that you cannot sprint it, and one minute is short enough that you start the next round still breathing hard. A common gym session gives each round one job: three rounds of skipping or the jump rope timer to warm up, three of shadowboxing, then four to six on the heavy bag, and a final round of body-weight work.
Use the rest actively. Walk, shake your arms out, sip water and breathe through your nose; sitting down makes the next round harder to start. If you are new, begin with the 2-minute bag workout and add rounds before you add length. Sparring and hard bag work are strenuous, so anyone with a heart condition, or returning after a concussion or hand injury, should get medical clearance first.
Common mistakes
- Emptying the tank in round 1. Hold a pace you could keep for every round on the chip you picked.
- Standing still in front of the bag. Move your feet between combinations as you would against an opponent.
- Skipping wraps on the heavy bag. Wraps and properly sized gloves protect the small bones of the hand and the wrist.
- Turning rests into phone breaks. A minute passes fast; stay on your feet and be ready before the beeps end.
