Pomodoro Timer

Work in focused blocks with a short break after each and a longer one after four. The timer moves through the cycle for you and keeps count of the sessions you finish.

How to use it

  1. Type what you are working on (optional), then press Start. The focus session runs for 25 minutes.
  2. When it rings, take the 5-minute break. Press Start again, or switch on auto-start to let the timer move on by itself.
  3. After four focus sessions the break is a long one: 15 minutes.
  4. Change any length or the number of rounds in the settings. The 50/10 and 52/17 presets set them for you.
  5. Skip jumps to the next phase; only focus sessions that run to the end are counted.

The Pomodoro Technique

The technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s and is named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used as a student (“pomodoro” is Italian for tomato).

The classic pattern is 25 minutes of work on a single task, a 5-minute break, and a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes after every fourth session. The lengths are a starting point, not a rule: if 25 minutes keeps cutting you off mid-thought, try 50 and 10.

Questions people ask

What do I do in the break?

Step away from the task: stand up, stretch, get water, look out of a window. The break is there to let your attention recover, so checking messages tends to defeat it.

Does it count a session if I stop early?

No. Only focus sessions that run their full length are added to today’s and this week’s totals. Stopped sessions still appear in your history, marked as stopped early.

Will it keep running in another tab?

Yes. The end time is fixed when you press Start, the tab title shows the time left, and the sound plays when the session ends. Turn on “Notify me” for a notification as well.

Where are my stats kept?

In this browser only, as part of your timer history. You can export or delete them on the History page.
