Study and break patterns

PatternStudyBreakGood for
25 / 525 min5 min, long break after 4Getting started, flashcards, tasks you keep putting off
45 / 1545 min15 minSchool-style lessons, younger students
50 / 1050 min10 min, long break after 3Reading, problem sets, most revision
90 / 2090 min20 minEssays, past papers, one hard subject

None of these is the “right” length. Pick the longest session you can finish without drifting, and shorten it if you find yourself checking the clock.

How to use it

  1. Type the subject or task in the box at the top, so the session has one job.
  2. Press Start and put your phone face down, out of reach. The timer runs 50 minutes of study.
  3. When it rings, take the whole 10-minute break away from the desk. Switch on auto-start if you want the next session to begin without a tap.
  4. After three sessions the break is a long one: 30 minutes. The counters show how many sessions and minutes you have done today.

Why 50 and 10

Twenty-five minutes is a good length for starting something you are avoiding, but it is short for studying. Reading a chapter, working a set of problems or drafting an answer takes a while to get into, and a bell at 25 minutes often lands in the middle of a thought. Fifty minutes is about the length of a school or university class, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to hold attention.

The break is not a reward, it is part of the method. Attention fades the longer you hold it on one thing, and a short rest brings it back. Ten minutes is enough to stand up, drink something and look out of a window, and not long enough to lose the thread.

What to do in the break

Leave the desk. Walk, stretch, refill your water, eat something. Anything that uses your body and rests your eyes works. What does not work is switching to another screen: messages and short videos give your attention something new to hold instead of letting it recover, and ten minutes of scrolling rarely stays ten minutes.

Before you get up, write one line about where you stopped and what comes next. Picking up from a note is much easier than rereading the page to find your place.

Common mistakes

  • Studying “until it is done” with no breaks. The last hour of a four-hour stretch is worth far less than the first.
  • Skipping the break because you are on a roll, then running out of steam two sessions later. If you must, finish the sentence and then stop.
  • Keeping the phone on the desk. Even face down it pulls at your attention. Another room is best.
  • Planning by hours instead of by task. “Two sessions on chapter 4 problems” is a plan; “study chemistry” is not.

Questions people ask

How long should I study before taking a break?

Most people do well with 45 to 50 minutes followed by a 10 to 15 minute break. If you struggle to start, use 25 and 5. For deep work on one hard topic, up to 90 minutes with a 20-minute break. Past about 90 minutes without a pause, concentration drops for almost everyone.

Is this a Pomodoro timer?

It works the same way, with longer sessions. The Pomodoro Technique uses 25 minutes of work and 5 of rest; tap the 25 / 5 preset to use it exactly, or open the Pomodoro timer.

How many study sessions can I do in a day?

Four to six 50-minute sessions of real concentration is a full day for most students. It is better to finish four good sessions than to sit at a desk for eight hours.

Does the timer keep going if I switch tabs?

Yes. The end time is fixed when you press Start, the tab title shows the time left, and the bell sounds when the session ends as long as the tab stays open.

Does it track how much I studied?

It counts finished study sessions and study minutes for today and this week, and every session is listed on the History page. All of it stays in your browser.
