Usually 15–20 minutes. Take it off while it is still damp.

Usually 10–15 minutes. Rinse while it is still slightly tacky, before it cracks.

Usually 20–30 minutes, until it is dry to the touch all over. Thick layers take longer.

Usually 10–15 minutes for a wash-off cream or gel. Acid or enzyme masks are often 5–10.

Anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the product. Check the tub.

These are typical label directions, not a substitute for them. The product label wins every time: if yours gives a different figure, set that with the steppers.

How to use it

  1. Read the directions on the packet or jar first. If the time differs from the chip, change it with the steppers.
  2. Tap your mask type and put the phone where you can reach the screen with a clean knuckle.
  3. Apply the mask, then press Start. For a peel-off or clay mask, start once the whole layer is on, since the first areas you covered are already drying.
  4. When the alarm sounds, remove or rinse the mask straight away and follow with the next step on the label, usually a moisturizer.

Why longer is not better

A mask does its work in the time on the label. A sheet mask is a carrier for a serum: while it is wet, it keeps that liquid against the skin. Once the sheet dries out it has nothing left to give and can start drawing moisture back, so peel it off while it is still damp. Clay behaves the opposite way. It absorbs oil as it dries, and if it is left until it cracks it over-dries the skin and can leave it tight, red and irritated.

The strict ones are exfoliating masks with acids or enzymes. Their label times are often 5 to 10 minutes and they mean it. Set the steppers to the exact figure and rinse when the alarm goes. Overnight “sleeping masks” are the exception to all of this: they are designed to stay on until morning and need no timer.

Clay mask time, peel-off masks and hair

Clay mask time depends on how thickly you spread it and how dry the room is. Ten minutes is a safe default; rinse as soon as the edges turn pale. Most clay masks are meant for once or twice a week. A peel-off mask needs the reverse: it has to be fully dry or it tears into pieces, so check the thickest patch before you lift an edge.

Hair masks vary the most, from 5-minute in-shower treatments to 30-minute deep conditioners, so the chip is only a middle setting. Patch-test any new product on a small area a day ahead. If a mask stings or burns, rinse it off at once, and if redness or swelling does not settle, or you have a skin condition such as eczema or rosacea, ask a dermatologist before using it again.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving a sheet mask on until it is dry, or falling asleep in it. Fifteen to 20 minutes is the whole job.
  • Waiting for a clay mask to crack like dry earth. By then it has taken too much from your skin.
  • Treating a tingling acid mask like a hydrating one and adding ten minutes. Follow that label to the minute.
  • Peeling a peel-off mask while patches are still wet. It smears, and you end up scrubbing it off.
  • Starting the timer before applying a mask that takes five minutes to spread. Start when the last of it is on.

Questions people ask

How long should you leave a face mask on?

It depends on the type: about 15–20 minutes for a sheet mask, 10–15 for clay or a wash-off cream, and 20–30 for a peel-off. Exfoliating masks are often only 5–10 minutes. Whatever your label says takes priority.

How long to leave a hair mask on?

Between 5 and 30 minutes depending on the product. Quick in-shower masks need about 5 minutes and deep conditioners up to 30. The chip sets 20; adjust it to the directions on the tub.

Can I leave a sheet mask on overnight?

No. Sheet masks are made for 15–20 minutes and dry out after that. Products sold as overnight or sleeping masks are different and are designed to stay on.

How do I know when a clay mask is ready to rinse?

The edges go lighter and the surface feels slightly tacky, usually after 10–15 minutes. Rinse then with lukewarm water. If it has cracked all over, it stayed on too long.

How often should I use a face mask?

Clay and exfoliating masks are generally used once or twice a week. Hydrating sheet masks can be used as often as you like if your skin is happy with them. Check each label for its own limit.
